PRESIDENT KIIR DIRECTS DEFENCE LEADERS TO CREATE CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ELECTIONS

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the newly appointed caretaker Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Ayor Akuoch Anok, and his deputy, Marial Chanuong, to ensure a secure environment for the country’s upcoming elections. President Kiir issued the directive during a meeting with the two Defence officials on Monday, where he also pledged his government’s continued support for the welfare of South Sudan’s men and women in uniform. The Defence leaders, responsible for overseeing the country’s security and military affairs, assured the Commander-in-Chief of their commitment to strengthening security sector reforms and transforming the national army. The meeting comes as the nation steps up preparations for the December elections, with security remaining a key priority.
