The National Policy programme on Liquidity Crisis commences in Juba. The program being designed to Diagnose policy options and Institutional Reforms has brought together stakeholders to foster modalities for ending cash hoarding by some individuals that has contributed to the disappearance of currency in market circulation. Caretaker Minister of Finance and Planning, Athian Ding Athian, says his institution, together with the Bank of South Sudan are working jointly on measures aim at promoting fiscal and monetary discipline, reduce uncertainty, and support the value and usability of the South Sudan Pounds. Athian encourages participants to use the forum to build a shared understanding of the crisis and make a credible national consensus for restoring price stability, stabilizing exchange rate and rebuilding confidence in South Sudan’s financial systems. For his part, the Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, raises deep concerns about those deliberately hoarding the huge amount of money in their houses, something he says is to distort the economy. Othow says the bank will continue to strengthen supervision, market surveillance and enforcement, adding that market discipline is essential for financial stability.
